First-time overall winners included Mike Alessi (Rockstar Makita Suzuki) and Christophe Pourcel (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), though neither one of those could be considered a surprise, since both of them are particularly speedy, and have to be considered championship contenders. Alessi did have to overcome a crash in the first moto, however.
The podium for the 450 class was just a bit confused. Josh Grant (JGRMX Toyota/Yamaha) had won the second moto…or so everyone thought. He was penalized a spot for jumping while passing a new “no jump” flag, and was docked a spot. While he got the win on TV, and made a podium appearance to go with his 9-1 score, after he was docked a spot in the second moto, it actually moved him to fifth overall. Honda Red Bull Racing’s Ivan Tedesco (2-4) was second on the day, and Chad Reed (Rockstar Makita Suzuki) actually scored his first podium of the year with a 6-3 tally…though he didn’t actually appear on the podium with the top three at Hangtown.
Chad also put in a really good first moto, despite starting mid-pack. He’s looking faster and more comfortable every moto out. |
